The show Reba has been my most recent obsession. Reba is witty, thoughtful and always gets a laugh out of me. But as I watch season after season, I keep noticing a recurring theme. The guys keep making cracks at each other about not being gay and not being feminine. Even the episode where Brock (the dad) is obviously supporting his son (who is not athletically inclined) there is a taste of disaproval. As Brock is supporting his son by teaching him dance steps, Reba comes in a makes a very obvious show of displeasure, leaving the room. On the one hand, there is some support for breaking gender norms (Jake learning dance) but it is so quickly followed up with it being a joke that any power the image might have had is lost. The same happens with Van, when he does women’s work out videos, someone always comes along and makes fun of him or when Brock wants to go to a day spa, they are immediately assumed to be gay.
So what do you guys think?
